RICE PRICE HIKE
Nigerians groan under what has become the toughest economic downturn in decades. The Buhari-led administration keeps promising palliatives and requesting understanding from the citizens but things having gotten out of hand. Bags of rice that used to go for under 10 thousand Naira have shot up to as much as 20 thousand Naira in certain parts of the country. One minister warns that prices could rise to as high as 40 thousand Naira by December this year! And to think that this is the main food staple of the large African country of 180 million people. One report conservatively puts rice importation at 365 billion Naira a year, not including local production.
The chant for change from the masses has become a dirge of death. Enough of the talk and semantics. President Buhari’s government needs to work fast. What good is a corruption fight that leaves the innocent populace dead from starvation?
